Verification, adjustment, and what each artifact detects

Calibration establishes readings against reference values with a stated uncertainty. What most shops need, and what this covers, is performance verification: confirming the machine still meets its stated specification, then adjusting geometry and the volumetric error map where the controller supports it.

For large-envelope bridge and gantry machines common in machinery and heavy equipment building, verification is normally performed on-site, at the foundation the machine already sits on.

What a visit covers

Scales, geometry, probing and length measurement error are checked in sequence, with as-found results recorded before adjustment.

  • 01

    Scale and reader head

X, Y and Z scales are inspected and cleaned; reader head output is checked and adjusted.

  • 02

    Air bearings and airlines

Bearing preload and supply air quality are checked against machine tolerance.

  • 03

    Geometry

Straightness, linearity and squareness are measured in the XY, ZX and ZY planes.

  • 04

    Length measurement error

E0 and E150 are tested per ISO 10360-2, 105 measurements across five lengths, three repeats, seven positions.

  • 05

    Probing error

PFTU is tested per ISO 10360-5 against a dedicated calibrated sphere, separate from the qualification reference sphere.

Sequence of work

  • 01

    Thermal soak

Artifacts and machine are allowed to stabilize to the specified environment before testing begins.

  • 02

    As-found test

Length measurement error, probing error and geometry are recorded before any adjustment.

  • 03

    Adjustment

Geometry is corrected and the volumetric compensation map updated where the controller permits it.

  • 04

    As-left verification

The same tests are repeated and results issued against the applicable specification.

Why Milwaukee CMM Calibration and Repair

  • 01

    Large-envelope experience

Weldments, frames and gearbox housings are within the working volumes routinely verified here.

  • 02

    Build-to-print aware

One-off and low-volume machinery parts are the norm, not high-volume PPAP throughput.

  • 03

    Repair through re-verification

Crash recovery and component repair are followed by a full as-left test, not a partial check.

Coverage across Wisconsin and the Greater Midwest

On-site service is scheduled across southeastern and eastern Wisconsin. Ship-in service is available outside that radius by arrangement.
